Mankind needs faster and faster ways of transmitting information. In this light, multi-color lasers are especially promising.
According to calculations made by Ars Technica, the technology will allow one fiber to transmit more data than today circulates through the entire optical network. Energy consumption will not increase.
Internet traffic is growing, and with it the need for electricity is increasing. Already today, up to 8% of all electricity produced by people is spent on data transmission. To continue to increase the volume of traffic without pressure on the energy system and the environment, cardinally new solutions are needed.
One of them can be optical communication based on lasers. If you divide the data into several colors - this process is called wavelength division multiplexing - much more information can be transmitted through one optocoupler. Unfortunately, each color will require its own laser, so that with increasing bandwidth, the energy consumption will also increase.
However, there is a way out of this vicious circle. It consists in the use of multicolor lasers. Such devices already exist: among them a laser with the support of 11 colors, created in Sandia National Laboratories (USA).
Since lasers themselves can not generate many of the necessary colors, researchers resort to a number of technical tricks. For example, if you let the beam through a thin fiber with a diameter of 300 nm, it will concentrate and become very bright. Light of this intensity will cause the fiber material to react, which at the output will color the beam into new colors. In theory, this technique allows the generation of up to 80 colors using a single laser, but no practical studies have yet been made.
The transfer rate using a single-color laser can reach 320 Gbit / s. However, if these colors are 80, then the figure increases to 25 Tb / c. Further, under one shell, up to 30 optical fibers can be present.
This means that a single fiber can provide speeds up to 768 Tbit / s. Given that the data is transmitted with some redundancy, which allows to avoid errors, the net speed can be estimated at 661 Tb / s.
This is an incredible figure. According to some sources, today this is the capacity of the entire optical network of the Earth.
A multicolor laser will consume only 5% of the energy required for the operation of 80 single-color analogs. Thus, for the fantastic speed you will not have to pay with the increased expenses for electricity. And when used in data centers, technology will significantly reduce energy consumption.
