American scientists representing the College of New Jersey, have developed an algorithm that recognizes the cries of the infant and determines which emotions it experiences. Artificial intelligence operates on approximately the same principle as a conventional speech recognition algorithm, reports mk.ru.
Initially, experts turned to professional nurses who helped determine what some babies shouting are talking about. As a result, it was possible to identify five signals related to food, sleep, the need for attention, the need to change the diaper and any other kind of discomfort. Also, experts drew attention to the movement of children, not associated with the reproduction of any kind of sounds.
Subsequently, on the basis of the obtained data, the authors of the new scientific work “taught” artificial intelligence, which observed 15 boys and 11 girls aged from three days to six months. Experts have resorted to the method of "compressed sensing", which allows to analyze new signals on the basis of previous ones and is used in the recognition of speech.
According to experts, in the course of the experiments, their development was indeed capable of “deciphering the language of children”, fixing various shouts and determining which signal each of them transmits.
Experts recognize that their development has yet to prove its effectiveness in the course of larger studies. If it meets expectations, scientists expect it to be used in medical facilities and will help both parents and employees of maternity homes to get more accurate information about the condition and needs of babies.
