Canadian scientists from the University of British Columbia have developed a new concept of solar panels. In them, solar energy is collected and stored by living bacteria.
Create bacterial solar panels have been trying for five years. Canadian scientists offer their way: the bacteria E. coli in the process of photosynthesis produce a large volume of lycopene, a natural dye that has a great potential in converting heat to electricity. A large number of bacteria were coated with a layer of semiconductor material for the production of electricity.
The specific power of such a bacterial source of electricity is still lower than that of traditional solar panels, but bacteria have the advantage that the life activity of bacteria, and accordingly, the generation of electricity, continues not only on sunny days, but also in cloudy weather.
