Boston startup Altaeros is developing Autonomous balloons. The company announced that it has received $7.5 million from Telecom giant SoftBank. The money is supposed to speed up the program startup SuperTower, which aims to connect remote rural areas to the Internet, writes TechCrunch.
A startup is not the first year working on their balloons. First, the company does dilute the specialization of their aircraft. They said that for them there can be a lot of options for useful application. In the last two years has dramatically increased the need for effective infrastructure that will provide remote areas access to the network. In this regard, the startup has started the implementation of the project SuperTower to this infrastructure to provide. Prospects in this area is difficult to overestimate. Now Internet access is difficult (or impossible at all) to 4 billion people. Whoever gets them first will gain a huge advantage.
SuperTower is a balloon that soars to a height of 250 meters and gives Internet. Startup promises to telecommunications companies to expand the coverage area cost 70% less compared to installation of traditional towers. While such a model will require much less energy to work. System with hot-air balloons can be deployed on a permanent basis and temporarily during emergencies or other disruptions on the network.
It should be noted that similar projects already implementing Facebook and Google. The first is a project Aquila, the second – project Loon. The question is, why do we need another company, and what are the benefits. The fact that Altaeros say that their system is the easiest to implement in existing networks. In fact, it is one communication tower, and only flying. Balloons installed on compatible equipment, it requires the same check that on the conventional towers of the same service, and clear the available specialists. Therefore, such a network can be deployed quickly and quietly.
