Engineers from the USA, China and Sweden created a drone capable of using branches and other elongated objects as a footprint.

After attaching the drone to an object, it can turn off one or more electric motors with screws, and thus spend less energy while continuing to fulfill its mission — for example, to make observations using a camera.
In most cases, multikopter is used for observation and other operations, during which the device hangs at a relatively high altitude, difficult for people to access. But the duration of the flight of modern electric multicopters is several tens of minutes (usually about half an hour), and hybrid drones working on an internal combustion engine-generator have a smaller mass of payload. As a rule, engineers solve this problem by increasing the battery capacity.
The group led by Fu Zhang (Fu Zhang) from the University of Hong Kong decided to increase the length of the drone's stay at height, reducing energy consumption of the main consumers in multicopter - electric motors. Since under normal conditions, reducing energy consumption will lead to loss of thrust and the fall of the drone, the developers used a different approach, which is used by birds and other flying animals. They offered to equip the drone with "legs", allowing the device to hook on the branches, edges of buildings and other objects, and use them as a support, allowing you to turn off one or more engines.
The design of the "legs" does not require the creation of a special drone and allows you to attach it to the bottom of the body of most serial multikopter. It consists of a base on which three arcuate plates are fixed. At their ends, various devices are fixed, allowing the drone to partially or completely fix itself on other objects: two identical hooks on two legs on one side, and two stops. Two hooks allow the drone to cling to the thin walls and completely turn off the engines. The stops are necessary for the device to stabilize its position and to disconnect part of the motors with screws located above the stop. In addition, the drone can be fixed on oblong objects, such as a branch of a tree, moving the legs around them. After that, he can turn off all the motors and turn over.
The developers showed the advantage of their approach by measuring the energy costs needed by the drone to maintain balance and keep themselves in one place. In case the drone grabs a branch or hooks on an object with a hook, it can completely turn off all the rotors. In other cases, he will still spend energy, but much less. For example, when using an object as a support, it can turn off two engines or leave everything turned on, but significantly reduce the thrust of the screws.
Experiments have shown that the design makes it possible to reduce the expenditure of energy for maintaining the drone several times as compared with the usual air suspension. In addition, it allows you to reduce the oscillations of the drone in hand, which can be useful when using it for shooting.
