Scientists have discovered a computer's ability not only to logical, but also to abstract operations - which he learned independently.
The difference between human and computer thinking lies not only in the speed of computation, but also in the ability to think abstractly. In order for a computer to be able to count something, it must first determine what it will count: for example, whole numbers or certain objects specified by the program. The latter task is complicated by the fact that many features of objects (shape, color, and size) may be similar in completely different objects. A man, looking at four cats, four apples and the number 4, intuitively knows that they all have a common feature - the abstract concept of "four". That was the difference between the biological and electronic brain - until recently.
The scientific journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science Science Advance published the results of a study in which artificial intelligence independently developed abstract thinking. During the experiment, a neural network designed for the simple detection of visual objects, was able to spontaneously develop a “human” approach to the calculation of objects.
The researchers found that certain parts of the network suddenly “tuned in” to abstract numbers, showing signs of neuron interaction in the real brain. AI "understood" that the image of four apples looks like the image of four cats - because the number of objects in both cases coincided.
According to the developers, their plans did not include the training of artificial intelligence in this method of calculation, and now they will have to figure out how he developed an unusual ability in himself. In the future, the use of similar algorithms can significantly expand the scope of neural networks.

The study is based on the study and use of the long-known plasmon quasiparticles within the framework of the physical phenomena of plasmonics. In short, plasmons represent a cloud of electrons on the surface of a material. They possess certain collective properties and, depending on a number of factors, can emit light in the visible range with a given wavelength (color).
Scientists from Cambridge have developed a technology for mass production of plasmon-based screens. The smallest particles of gold were covered with conductive plastic polyaniline and evenly sprayed on the plastic surface with a mirror coating previously applied on it. Each granule of gold on the surface is the basis for a miniature pixel, the dimensions of which are a million times smaller than that of the screens of modern smartphones. The technology is very simple for mass production, as the developers insist. Such screens with billions of pixels per meter can be released with continuous tape at high speed. We are talking about the production of flexible displays literally the size of the wall of a multistory building.
Light falling on such a screen falls into a trap between plastic-coated gold nanoparticles. Conductive plastic coating under the influence of the control voltage in a given way changes the chemical properties and causes a change in the wavelength of the reflected light in a wide spectrum (the wavelength can be reduced to 100 nm or less). The pixel begins to glow in a given color and, importantly, such a bistable state that it does not require power to hold the selected color.

Prospects for such screens are huge - from information to camouflage. The highest resolution will allow to hide the fighter even in open areas, and the use of the architecture will open the way to new and unusual solutions.
