The so-called soft robotics, based on the use of flexible polymeric materials, has a really impressive list of technical advantages in comparison with traditional robotics - that is why so much money and time is spent on its development and improvement. So the team of specialists in robotics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology decided to contribute to this development, presenting today a unique version of artificial muscles based on the use of special complex polymer coils-beams that change their shape depending on the effect of a particular temperature spectrum.
More specifically, the new development is a slightly reworked type of artificial muscles for robots, which is based on the use of special coils-wires composed of cyclic copolymers and elastomers, as well as thermoplastic polyethylene, which in total gives a material with unique properties. Material that can autonomously and without any third-party control adapt in its form depending on where it is affected by a source of low or high temperature.
In some ways, the new format of artificial muscles resembles the internal structure of a cucumber, because here and there the principle of enveloping with the processes of the main structure is used - which in this case consists of a mix of polymers. Whatever it was, at this point in time, scientists continue to test their new development, which promises to be really decisive in the near future in the field of applied robotics. Especially considering the fact that for them this is the first experience.
