Keppel Data Centers, which the media began to write about more often in connection with the development of seawater-cooled data centers, is planning to build such a data center in Singapore.
This city-state has a small territory, and the authorities tightly control land use. Therefore, it’s hard for cloud giants like Google and Amazon to find a place in the country to build their computing power.
Keppel Data Centers wants to create a data center on the water. To do this, it is planned to build several sea harbors with floating modules of data centers, which would share a single unit that generates energy (also located on the water).
“We have in mind several places that we are exploring <...> Most of the sites are located offshore," said Keppel Data Centers CEO Wong Wai Meng in a conversation with Channel News Asia.
The company presented the layout of its project: two dozen barges with data center modules are located along the marina and four more with power sources. Each barge can have a capacity of up to 10 MW. According to Structure Research for 2018, the entire Singapore data center market was 360 megawatts.
