The most powerful German supercomputer is located in the Jülich Research Center (Forschungszentrum Jülich) in North Rhine-Westphalia. As reported by DW, it was put into operation at the end of June.
Juwels (the abbreviation of Jülich Wizard for European Leadership Science) demonstrated a performance of 6.2 petaflops - it can produce 6.2 quadrillion operations on numbers with a moving point (or comma) per second. The machine takes 23rd place in the TOP-500 of the most powerful computers in the world. No German computer works faster than Juwels.
The supercomputer consists of various specialized components, which can be connected to each other by means of a software interface, if necessary.
The theoretical maximum power of the first cluster module Juwels can reach 12 petaflops - this is the total capacity of 60 thousand modern personal computers!
And in 2019 Juwels will receive a booster - an accelerator for conducting parallel computing operations.
So far, the most powerful supercomputers are being created in the US and China. The June TOP 500 rating is led by the Summit, developed by IBM for the US Department of Energy's National Oak Ridge Laboratory. The calculation speed is 122 petaflops. According to the June TOP500 in the US, there are six of the ten fastest supercomputers in the world, two in China, one in Japan and Switzerland.
The next epoch in computer engineering is super-powerful supercomputers of the exaFLOPS class, the productivity of which will be thousands of times larger. In Germany, the Juwels model will be the model for creating the exaflop computer. The power of the future superfast supercomputer will be more than 500 petaflops - the total power of all supercomputers from the top ten of the current TOP500.
